Healthcare is a disaster. A great deal has to do with a corrupt system that benefits everyone except the patient & the doctor & the employer (who is paying the majority of the costs). Right behind it is the insurmountable cost of chronic lifestyle diseases, the majority of which are intimately related to excess weight & poor nutrition. We aren’t going to fix healthcare until we fix health. And we aren’t going to fix health until we fix the food. We need to work backwards from the biggest problem instead of throwing bandaids at the results. A 20+ career in medicine, almost half of that spent in Obesity Medicine, has been eye-opening. Thankfully, self-funded employers are waking up to the problem – now, we just need to get some solutions in place to start turning this massive ship around. It’s not going to happen quickly and there are going to be some skinned knees along the way, but we can’t afford not to do it. This is why I’m spending all of my time trying to get a quality disease management program treating obesity into the employers. It would be easier & much more comfortable to simply stay in the clinic, treating people one at a time, but it’s not enough! We all have to think bigger!
